Snow Shovel Safety Tips

Be a Smart Shoveler: Clear Snow Without Injury

Nationwide, snow shoveling is responsible for about 100 deaths and countless injuries a year. Be cautious even if you’re usually active because cold weather raises blood pressure and constricts arteries. Follow these tips to be safe on shovel duty.

  • Pump it up—do warm-up stretches first
  • Push the snow—don’t lift it
  • If you must lift, bend with your legs, not your back
  • Don’t shovel after drinking alcohol or eating a heavy meal
  • Shovel early and often during storms—attack the snow in small pieces
