Perfecting the Pose: Downward Dog

Sep 23, 2016

New to yoga, or looking to improve your practice?

We’re excited to announce “Perfecting the Pose,” a new series of yoga beginner videos–and what better time to launch than #NationalYogaMonth? Watch PA-based instructor Andrew Siegele show you how to bend, stretch, and breathe.

This series is great for those who have found themselves in class thinking, “Am I doing this right?” “What should I do with my feet?” “How often should I breathe in and out?” These short videos should bring some clarity to your “OM?” moments. Namaste, Pennsylvanians!

Up this week: Downward Dog.

Downward Dog: Extended Instruction

  1. Begin by breathing in and out gently and fully
  2. Continue this rhythmic breathing as you set up the pose
  3. Set hands about shoulder-width apart
  4. Set feet about hip-width apart
  5. Spread fingers, root down each fingertip, and top of palm
  6. With arms slightly bent, roll elbows toward one another and extend arms (this creates space around the neck, broadens the upper back and relieves tension)
  7. Reach heels down, extend legs long, tip pelvis forward
  8. Rest head in line with arms, shoulders slide away from ears
  9. Allow each breath to continue filling the body with energy and releasing stiffness

Stay tuned for the next video in our series: Breathing Basics.
