5 Health Benefits of Being in Love

Jan 30, 2018

Did you know that being in a happy, loving relationship may have an impact on your health? These five examples show how a loving relationship can provide a boost to your health.

Faster healing

Engaging in positive conversation and receiving encouragement from your significant other can help you bounce back faster. A study conducted with 42 married couples found that when they had positive interactions, instead of arguments, they healed up to one day sooner when recovering from minor injuries. (As part of the study, a suction device was used to give the couples eight tiny blisters on their arms.)

Lower blood pressure

According to Julianne Holt-Lunstad, an associate professor of psychology, happily married people have lower blood pressure than unmarried people. However, being in an unhappy relationship can contribute to higher blood pressure.

Longer life expectancy

A national longitudinal mortality study found that married people live longer.

Increased well-being

Oxytocin, sometimes known as “the love hormone,” increases when you have intimate physical contact, such as a hug or kiss. According to this review of research, the hormone’s impact on emotional responses contributes to relaxation, trust, and psychological stability. Brain oxytocin also appears to reduce stress responses, including anxiety.

Boosted fitness levels

According to celebrity fitness trainer and editor-at-large for Shape magazine Jay Cardiello, “Nearly half of people who exercise alone quit their programs after one year, but two-thirds of those who work out with a loved one stick to it.”
