When people talk about being prescribed a Z-pak, do you know what they’re talking about?
For example, we hear quite a bit these days about “Z-paks.” A “Z-pak” is a brand-name, prepackaged, five-day course of the common antibiotic azithromycin used to treat certain bacterial infections.
Azithromycin, like all antibiotics, works by stopping the growth of bacteria, so it will not kill viruses that can cause colds, flu, and other infections.
Don’t be intimidated by big words and alphabet soup terminology. Before taking any medication, it is important to understand its purpose and what effects it could have on your body. Be your own health care advocate. When presented with a treatment option or diagnosis, always ask your doctors questions so that you have the best understanding of the prescribed treatment.
