Hospital Week: Did You Know?

May 5, 2017

Pennsylvania is home to approximately 251 licensed hospitals. They all have an environmental impact on their surrounding communities.

More Pennsylvania hospitals are choosing to use renewable energy sources, environmentally responsible construction, and environmentally friendly practices. In the Philadelphia area, six hospitals receive a portion of their power from a Pennsylvania wind farm.

Jefferson Health in Philadelphia, “recognizes that it has a responsibility to be a strong and effective steward of its resources.”

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital built an energy-efficient chilled water plant that provides cooling to six buildings and saves water and energy costs as a part of their sustainability efforts.

In an effort to create a green campus, the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC designed its buildings to use energy, water, materials, and land more efficiently. Two of their buildings received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. The hospital also shows its commitment to environmental responsibility through its green education program.

One way Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC shows its commitment to environmental responsibility is through their green education program geared toward staff, patients, and visitors.
