Summer is rapidly approaching—the perfect time to go on a ride with your family, take your dog to the park, or bring out a hammock and finally break into the latest must-read you’ve been hearing about. But before you head outdoors, keep these six simple tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in mind to make sure you’re protecting your skin from harmful sun rays.

1. Lather up
Apply sunscreen before putting on your clothes to prevent missing any spots. Don’t forget the back of the neck, behind the ears, and the feet. Reapply sunscreen if you’re in the sun for more than two hours.
2. Save the date
Keep an eye on sunscreen expiration dates, because ingredients lose effectiveness over time. Sunscreens typically maintain their original SPF strength for up to three years, so you don’t need to toss out last year’s bottle, but be aware of dates, as well as any obvious changes in color and consistency.
3. Spray before you swim
Use water-resistant sunscreen, which offers protection if you sweat or swim—and reapply after swimming.
4. Protect your smile
Did you know that your lips can get sunburned, too? Stock up on lip balm that contains sunscreen. Reapply often!
5. Cover the range
Choose sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection. Aim for SPF 15 or higher for adults, and SPF 30 or higher for children.
6. Rock your shades
Wear UV-blocking sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your eyes from sun damage. Loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and pants made from tightly woven fabric are the best sources of protection from the sun.
